Why a Morning Routine is Good for You

While some of us might hear the term “morning routine” and think, “BORING!” the truth is that many successful people will tell you that it’s a secret of their success.  A morning routine doesn’t just set you up to win the day, but to win the week, the month…you see where we are going.  Let’s get into the reasons you should build a morning routine you love.

It Increases Productivity

Instead of having to start from scratch every morning with the hows and whats of the day, you move along smoothly along the rails of a routine.  You’re not slowed down by decisions of what to eat or what to wear: you’ve created a system that allows you to more effortlessly move through a “boot up sequence” for your body, mind, and heart.

It Sets the Tone For the Day

“Win the morning, win the day” is a classic quote that even night owls will concede.  If you start the day in control, you will have more confidence to carry you through the day.  That doesn’t mean, of course, that you’re protected from things that throw you off track.  It does mean you’ll be better prepared for those things because of a strong start.  On the flip side, if you start behind, you’ll often stay behind.  And those without a morning routine struggle with setting a consistent tone every day.

It Lowers Stress

Many people have seen during the Covid-19 pandemic how much uncertainty affects stress levels.  But people miss the fact that much more important than uncertainty about future vacations or investments is the uncertainty of the next day.  But a morning routine is a little tweak that saves you that stress.  There’s no worry about “what happens next” when you have a routine in place, which means you start your day with just that little less stress.

It Leads to Better Habits

When you build a routine, you’re eventually going to build habits through repetition.  One of those building blocks of a morning routine is better sleep.  Better sleep is affected by better eating and regular exercise.  Not only can you improve your existing habits because of a morning routine, you can break yourself of bad ones!

Combat Forgetfulness

One of the worst aspects of a disorganized morning is that nagging feeling that you’re forgetting something.  When you have a morning routine in place, your brain’s bandwidth is freed up to help you focus on what matters.  When you’re not tasking your brain with creatively figuring out “what’s next,” it’s free to focus on helping you remember what you need to know.

It Improves Relationships

We noted above that there are night owls and the reality is you don’t have to be a “morning person” to have a morning routine.  While not everyone you live with will benefit from your morning routine, no one will benefit from consistently disorganized mornings.  Your routine can inspire others to have their own, and as a result, everyone is positively influenced to win the morning…and the day.
