3 Mistakes to Avoid When Cleaning Hardwood Floors

Keeping your home neat and tidy can be overwhelming and time-consuming as you can’t complete all cleaning tasks using the same methods. Different surfaces require different cleaning methods and cleaning agents and techniques. So investigate thoroughly before you grab a mop or a commercial cleaner, as a slight mistake may cause some major problems.

Take your hardwood floor, for example. Cleaning it may seem simple, but there are so many ways you can damage your beloved surfaces. You can’t clean them as you’d clean your tiles, can you?

That’s why relying on experts who offer trustworthy house cleaning services in Pacific Palisades, CA, would be a perfect option for you. But if you don’t have time to call in the pros, below are some common mistakes people make when cleaning their hardwood floors and how to avoid them. Read on!

What will ruin hardwood floors?

Hire reputable house cleaning services in Pacific Palisades, CA todayHardwood floors are among the favorite flooring options because they introduce a sense of warmth and elegance into your home, making it more welcoming and eye-pleasing. They create a feeling of coziness, and you constantly receive compliments about them.

However your floors can become scratched and lifeless if you don’t maintain them properly. Here are some things you should never do while attending to your dearest surfaces:

Don’t use harsh cleaning agents

Strong cleaning products can mar the beautiful finish and make your floors look dull and unattractive. Don’t use ammonia-based cleaners either, and you should avoid using vinegar and baking soda as well since they can age the wood prematurely.

Vinegar’s acidity will eat away the protective coating, and baking soda is mildly abrasive, so it can do an equal amount of damage. Instead, opt for mild dish soap for regular maintenance.

However, whenever in doubt about which cleaning agent to use, it’s highly recommended to contact the manufacturer and get informed on how to maintain your hardwood floors properly.

Don’t soak your hardwood floors in the water while cleaning them

Hardwood floors are extremely porous surfaces, meaning they can absorb and hold water, and this can make your floors swell and wrap. To avoid this nightmare scenario, you need to be extra careful not to expose your hardwood floors to excessive amounts of water while cleaning them.

Simply use a slightly damp mop, making sure to dry the floors thoroughly afterward. And don’t let any water sit on the surfaces for a long time. Attend to any spills immediately.

Stay away from vacuum cleaner attachments to prevent scratches

Not only do these scratches look unsightly, but they can also be a perfect hideout for dust and dirt. To be on the safe side, opt for soft brush attachments that don’t offer too much resistance. Also, avoid vacuum cleaner attachments with rotating brushes or beaters, as these can damage the wood severely.

How to Clean Hardwood Floors in 5 Easy Steps

Do you need to grab a mop and clean your floors, but you don’t feel like doing it? This is so understandable! This is one of the more difficult and more boring tasks, and it’s far from anybody’s favorite activity. However, don’t get desperate. Keeping your hardwood floor pristine does sound complicated, and there are some mistakes you should avoid, but it’s far from impossible.

To be on the safe side, you can always book a house cleaning service for your home in Pacific Palisades. But if you’re a do-it-yourself kind of person, we’ve prepared a short guide on how to clean your hardwood floors efficiently. Keep reading to learn more!

How do you clean wooden hardwood floors?

How do you clean wooden hardwood floorsWhat makes cleaning hardwood floors slightly challenging is their porousness. Water can easily seep into cavities, making your hardwood floor swell and wrap in no time. Also, their delicate nature makes them sensitive to harsh cleaning chemicals and abrasive vacuum cleaner attachments.

If you aren’t sure what cleaning method to use, consult the manufacturer. However, in most cases, mild dish soap and warm water will be enough for regular maintenance.

So make your dull floors look gorgeous with these simple steps:

  1. Vacuum the floors gently, without using harsh attachments that could damage your precious hardwood flooring.
  2. Add a few drops of dish soap or castile soap to warm water. Since you don’t want to oversaturate the floor, you don’t need large amounts of water: 4 cups will be sufficient.
  3. Grab a twist mop, dip it in your cleaning mixture, wring it, and then attend to a section at a time.
  4. Rinse and dry thoroughly, and then move to another section, always making sure to leave no water sitting on the surface longer than it should.
  5. Repeat this until you’ve covered the entire floor, and you’re done! However, you should also inspect your flooring once again and ensure you’ve performed well.

Extra tips:

  1. It might be tempting to use vinegar and baking soda for your hardwood floors if you’ve got used to cleaning with them. This isn’t a clever idea, as they can eat away the protective layer, making your floor look unattractive.
  2. Avoid using straight ammonia, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. They’ll dull or scratch the finish too. You should also avoid these chemicals while cleaning your tiles.
  3. Don’t let water sit on your hardwood floor for too long, as your floor will absorb it and lose its shininess over time.
  4. Make sure to attend to your hardwood floors regularly, as lack of daily maintenance will make your favorite surfaces seem less attractive and grimier.
  5. When cleaning an entire room, always apply a top-to-bottom approach, leaving the floors last since you don’t want to clean them twice.

5 Ways to Snag More Last Minute Bookings

Did you know that 44% of leisure travelers and 56% of business travelers make their bookings at the last minute?  While it’s ideal to have your listing(s) booked weeks or even months in advance, every now and then there will be some unsold nights that you’d love to see turned into revenue.  There are a few strategies you can use to make sure you do just that.

Stay Price-Flexible

Each owner/manager knows the break-even price of each listing, below which you would actually lose money if a guest were to come to stay.  However, often there’s a fair bit of margin between that price and your ideal price.  As the unsold nights get closer to the present day, you should be active in either manually bringing those prices down or setting your channel manager to do that automatically.  While last-minute travelers can sometimes be desperate for anything at any price, very often a well-priced deal will encourage them to pick you over someone else.

Use Social Media

If you haven’t already been active in social media and various travel groups on platforms like Facebook, you’re missing a great opportunity to snag possible guests.  “Last minute trip to X” will often match the precise keywords that a guest may be using to find a property like yours.  Because of the easy shareability of social media, a single post with, “Last-minute availability in X” with a link to your listing can be shared until it gets to someone who needs precisely that.

Use an Email List

An email list is another tool that savvy vacation rental owners/managers use to funnel in business.  Such newsletters don’t have to be lengthy – as long as they add value people will open them (like we hope you are opening this!).  Subscribers will include fans of your property who can then forward that email on to a friend with a sentence like, “Remember that place I told you Bob and I stayed at last year?  They’ve got a last minute booking available for next week!”  Even if someone misses out on a deal they may decide to subscribe to your email newsletter so as not to do so in the future.

List Across Multiple Platforms

We’ve shared previously that a great way to bring in more guests on a regular basis is to list on multiple platforms instead of being exclusive to one.  There are channel managers to help you do just that.  This multiplies the number of guests who will see your flexible prices as they search for an accommodation that meets their last-minute needs.

List On Sites that Specialize in Last-Minute Travel

In addition to listing on multiple platforms for your standard bookings, there are platforms like Whimstay that cater specifically to last-minute travelers.  These platforms have their own social media and newsletters to reach even more travelers.

How House Plants Can Improve Your Living Space

Most people notice what an aesthetic improvement house plants can be in almost any living space.  What they don’t realize is all the other benefits that our green friends bring along with them!  We recently looked into this and found a bunch of interesting research.  Check it out!

Boost Your Mood

Studies have shown that plants can boost your productivity and concentration.  Given the pace of work these days it’s not that surprising that a bit of color can help us work better.  It could be that plants give us a “micro break” that help us plow forward in our tasks.

With more people working from home than ever before, plants in your home will make your “work” environment better too.

Reduce Stress

While there are studies that show that plants do indeed reduce stress and fatigue, most of us know this anecdotally: anytime we’ve visited a beach or a forest or a beautiful part of nature we’ve felt relaxed, more at peace.

Hence it’s not that surprising that plants in your home will deliver that same feeling in micro doses.  Why should you have to plan a big trip in order to get that stress relief?

Clean Your Air

NASA has a vested interest in studying how to make air cleaner: they have to work in environments in which air is in limited supply.  Hence it’s not that surprising that they’ve commissioned numerous studies to study how plants deal with toxins.  One in particular showed that plants often removed toxins in a short amount of time.

While most of us aren’t dealing with toxins on a space station, there are lots of stealth toxins lurking in our homes.  Paints, detergents, and even our furniture give off compounds that reduce air quality.  Opening windows can only do so much (and isn’t as fun to do in winter!).  Plants improve air quality by:

  • Absorbing toxins
  • Increasing humidity (plants release 97% of the water they take in!)
  • Producing oxygen

Improve Your Sleep

Speaking of producing oxygen, that’s what plants generally do during the day.  When the light goes away, most plants go into carbon dioxide producing mode.  That’s when plants like aloe vera and snake plants are smart choices for your bedroom: they emit oxygen at night.

Remember that better sleep doesn’t just come from refreshed air (thanks to your new aloe vera plants) but from relaxing smells.  Choices like lavender and jasmine can aid this.

Care for Something

Let’s be honest, it’s nice to see a little (or big) plant that has survived thanks to our watering.  It’s an accomplishment for you and a win/win for your air/life quality at home.

We could go on and on about plants reducing noise levels, adding more privacy, and adding life to your space, but we think we’ve made our point!

Companies Shaping the Vacation Rental Industry, Part 2

In our last article about companies shaping the vacation rental industry, we looked at businesses that help hosts with property management, smart connectivity, and welcoming guests.  Today we’re going to examine companies leading the way in providing data, managing channels, and adding experiences to the mix.

Data Providers

As the vacation rental industry has grown, so has the importance and use cases of big data.  There are lots of companies taking on different niches in this space.

Airdna has gotten a lot of attention for its Marketminder feature which allows its users to zero in on local markets, leveraging data from 10M properties across 80,00 cities worldwide.  Key metrics include:

  • Occupancy rate
  • Annual revenue
  • Average daily rate

Transparent ups the ante by using data from 35M properties, but specifically only from Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com properties.

A company called Mashvisor addresses the larger investment game: buying properties specifically for vacation rentals.  They do this using a dataset currently focused in the US that allows users to identity cities and neighborhoods that meet their criteria for investment in this space.

Channel Managers

Channel management allows your vacation rental to be listed across multiple platforms.  The big ones that come to mind are Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com.  But if you want to add channel management, you might also want access to many of the other platforms that are coming up in this still-fragmenting space, like Flipkey and Housetrip.

The biggest value-adds in channel managers are the ability to sync calendars so that you can’t be double-booked and the ability to monitor pricing across various platforms to allow you to adjust prices as needed for maximum profitability.  Some channel managers, like Lodgify, also make it easy for you to set up your own website for your vacation rental so that you can benefit from direct bookings.

Hospitable, lauded for its ease of use, is also a leading channel manager, as well as Guesty, which we already noted is a leader in the Property Management Software space.

Experiences

Back in 2016, Airbnb saw a natural add-on in vacation rentals and chose to add “Experiences” to their offerings.  As a host, you can create experiences that can be booked by guests at your properties but can also appeal to a wider audience (who can then also learn about your listings).  It’s a natural way to add revenue and a different facet to the vacation experience for guests.

But if you’re not interested in hosting an experience yourself, there are no shortage of companies that you can use to find fun activities to direct your guests to consider.  Three of them include:

  • GuideAdvisor – focused on local guides
  • Viator – powered by TripAdvisor and with a staggering number of offerings
  • Xplorie – focused on fun, local, and free activities, Xplorie ties together the vacation rental experience with activity planning

There are so many exciting things happening in almost every part of the vacation rental industry that even a pandemic can’t suppress.  Take a look at all the categories we mentioned, do some research, and see if adding their services to what you’re doing might be just what you need to take your listings to the next level.
